How to Remove a Broken Nock You Can't Grab
Share
Sometimes it's the small issues in archery that create the biggest headaches. A broken nock lodged flush with the bushing can leave you stuck and unable to shoot. Pliers won't grip it, hooks can't reach it, and you're left wondering how to fix it quickly.
Fortunately, there's a simple and effective solution. All you need is a screw and a pair of pliers.
The Problem
When a nock shears off and the remaining piece is embedded deep into the bushing, it can be impossible to grip with standard tools. This happens frequently after a hard impact or a robin hood. The broken nock sits flush, and it won’t come out without a little creativity.
The Trick: Use a Screw
Here’s how to remove a broken nock easily
-
Take a small screw and twist it gently into the center hole of the broken nock.
-
Once the threads catch and bite into the plastic, grip the screw with pliers.
-
Wiggle the screw side to side while applying gentle pressure to pull it out.
This method works because even a few threads of engagement can provide enough grip to remove the nock.
If the nock spins inside the bushing and the screw won’t bite, try lightly heating the screw with a torch first. This helps melt it slightly into the plastic, creating a better hold.
Check for Damage
Before inserting a new nock, inspect the shaft and bushing
If the bushing has begun to pull out, apply light heat directly to the bushing (not the carbon shaft). Once it is warm, press it back into position and let it cool.
After confirming the fit, install your replacement nock.
Final Notes
This is a quick, low-effort solution that works without requiring specialized tools. It can save your arrow and keep you from cutting practice short.
